PROVERBS SUMMER BIBLE STUDY

Chapters 5-8 Wisdom and Discernment

These chapters continue to teach about the power of wisdom, and to pay close attention to the things that will lure you in this life. We must use discretion and discernment and seek the will of God. There is a lot to uncover here, but some key points we noted in our study were these things:

Chapter 5 warns against adultery. There is a message for men and women, but as ladies, we should remain pure and not become consumed by the sins of the flesh. This may be a bit awkward to read, but the Bible makes it very clear how we are to view these types of relations.

Proverbs 5:1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom..

(for if we go astray) Proverbs 5:11-14 At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. You will say, “How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! I would not obey my teachers or turn my ear to my instructors. And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people.”

Chapter 6 warns again folly, which means foolishness. We must choose to live a life that lines up to the will of God. There are six things the Lord hates:

Proverbs 6:16-19 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Chapter 7 warns against seduction and impurity. As ladies of God we are to conduct ourselves in a way that please the Lord. In our manner and dress. This chapter provides descriptions of a woman stalking young men and using her body and manner in a way to trick them to engage in sin.

Proverbs 7:27 Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down the chambers of death.

Chapter 8 Wisdom. It reminds us of the importance of being wise and that it is a characteristic of our God. This chapter goes back to the truth that God is our strength in our human weakness. So, when we don't know what to do, we should look no further than God's wisdom for us.

Proverbs 8:17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me and find me.
