When You Feel Misunderstood

Have you ever had a friend hurt you with their words? What about a parent or loved one that did something, leaving you feeling a bit confused or even angry?

It hurts to “feel” misunderstood. It can also make us believe things that really aren’t necessarily true about ourselves and others. Maybe you feel judged or you think that a friend or family member really doesn’t care. Our views of others can quickly change with a simple action or comment.

As much as we would all like to be understood and someone to say, “I totally get it.” Sadly, sometimes we may never hear that. That is because nobody fully understands the depths of our hearts, struggles and pain like our Father.

God knows your heart and understands exactly what you are going through. Better yet, He understands you better than you understand yourself.

Psalm 139:1-3, 6 Lord, you have examined me and you know me. You know everything I do; from far away you understand all my thoughts. You see me, whether I am working or resting; you know all my actions.…Your knowledge of me is too deep; it is beyond my understanding.

People will fail us, whether intentional or not and it does cause painful consequences. Unfortunately, we will do the same to others, because as imperfect people, we are also imperfectly emotional, and can sometimes react in ways that hurt others.

When we lean into our negative thoughts, it can cause us to bottle up our feeling or lash out in heated anger. In the end it can bring about guilt and shame that none of us want to feel. However, when we recognize that people will never fully understand or love us the way our Father does, we let go of the expectations we place on others. We allow them to support and love on us in the ways they can, but let our Father take care of the misunderstandings and deep pain.

So, when it seems as if nobody understands, run to the One that does understand. Open up your heart to your Father and come clean to Him about how you are feeling. Let Him wash peace over you like nobody else in this world can.

This week as you dig into the Word, my prayer is that you find peace in knowing you may not feel fully understood by others and that is okay. Don't make your source of fulfillment in this life come from other people, yet, instead find it in our God that loves you like no other!
